Have you ever asked yourself this question? Why is there so much light on earth but almost none once you leave our planet?
Well is space really dark are you sure?
For Instance, imagine yourself fastening seat belt in spacecraft and took off from the earth’s surface. It will just take 150 seconds for your shuttle to get out of the earth’s atmosphere. Once you enter into space the first thing you can feel is black or darkness.
If you are still not sure just remember the all-time favorite space movie you have watched like Gravity, Interstellar. I am sure now you can fell that oil-silk darkness in the space.
What’s the reason for that?
It’s all because of the unique atmosphere surrounded our earth. Our atmosphere is full of dirt, gases, water droplets, and molecules. When sunlight hits these particles it diffuses and creates different colors due to this scattering process we see the blue color sky and all those spectacular shades during sunshine and sunset.
But when it comes to space even though it is filled with lots of different gases but it has no atmosphere with molecules to reflect sunlight. That’s why even when the sun is shining and blazing out there space looks like a black void.
If one day the earth’s atmosphere disappeared it will be just as dark as in space.
What if we were on the moon?
Unlike earth, there is no atmosphere on the moon. If you find yourself on the moon as there is no atmosphere the sky will be black both day and night you will be able to see shining stars even when the sun is blazing on the surface during the day.
Finally what about Mars?
Our scientist has looked up to the stars and set their sights on the red planet to make humans as interstellar species. In the near future humans gonna colonize mars for sure.
Compared to Earth, Mars has a much thinner atmosphere, with an atmospheric volume of less than 1% of Earth’s. Due to the atmosphere, you can see the colored sky on mars as well but probably with different colors like rosy red and orange, and during the night since there are no clouds you can have a clear picture of billions of shining stars. Only if you get out of mars atmosphere you can have visuals of dark space.
